PENNSYLVANIA FISH HATCHERY Wayne Township's own Fish Hatchery was the second created in Pennsylvania (the first in eastern Pennsylvania lasted only a handful of years in the 1800's before the water source dried up). It was the first hatchery in western Pennsylvania, is the longest continuously operated hatchery in the state, and served as a prototype for the expansion of hatcheries across the Commonwealth. The fish hatchery is operated by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. The Corry Fish Hatchery offers scheduled tours Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., by calling Paul or Dan at (814)664-2122. You may visit www.fish.state.pa.us to gather more information about your local fish hatchery, as well as others in Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission and Wayne Township Municipality have approved the application for a roadside historical marker, to commemorate the Corry State Fish Hatchery's importance in state history. However, the installation & dedication of the historical marker have been put on hold until at least next year. The grant money from the state to help pay for the marker has been temporarily shut off as lawmakers and Gov. Ed Rendell wrangle over what the state's final spending plan will include. Initially the dedication ceremonies were planned for October 2009, but that plan has been pushed back until spring.
